PLAN YOUR WEDDING Entertainment Key to a Memorable Reception by Ray Cadell "Big Ray" Owner, Great Party Bands & Big Ray and the Kool Kats P erhaps the single most critical component to a great wedding reception is the entertainment. From pro- viding smooth, elegant, quiet music for cocktails all the way to creating special musical moments for the intro- ductions and the all important bride, groom and family dances, from dinner music to getting everybody on the dance floor, the right band or DJ contributes the musical backdrop and vision for the evening. Here are some questions to ask your entertainment provider: 1. Does the band or DJ have wedding reception experience? Could we receive contact info for 5 bridal parties they've worked for in the last 6 months? 2. Do they understand that this event is all about the bride and groom and not the band? 3. Are they happy to discuss and prepare special requests? 4. Will they be sensitive to volume specifications throughout the evening? 5. Will they and their set up crew be appropriately dressed? 6. How many breaks might they need throughout the evening and will they work with you on tim- ing? 7. Do they include emcee services, wireless micro- phones for toasts, etc. 8. Are there any extra fees above and beyond the contract price. 9. Will they provide early set up so the stage is 100% ready before first guests arrive. Most importantly, speak directly with the bandleader or DJ very early in the process to try and determine if they are a good artistic fit for you. Are you looking for background music with very little attention on the music itself or a full out party eve- ning or somewhere in between? Talking the evening through with an experienced bandleader will help you nail down your ideals. And finally, understand the pricing. The entertainment can truly be the difference between an ordinary event and the most special evening of your life. The best generally costs a little more. And I have to say that while a great DJ is definitely better than a mediocre band, NOTHING beats a top shelf, fun, flexi- ble, live wedding band.
