Love, Meditation, Prayer... and GoudaCheese Twenty-five years ago, six nuns leſt Mount St. Mary's Abbey in Massachusetts, the first monastery of Cistercian nuns in the United States, to embark on a new journey. Formed in 1949 by sisters from its namesake in Ireland, St. Mary's growth over the years had made it necessary for some members of the order to leave the abbey and establish "daughter houses" elsewhere. In the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, they formed Our Lady of Angels Monastery – the first of its kind to be located in the South. "For some in the area, we were among first Catholic nuns they had ever laid eyes on," said Sister Barbara, who serves as the monastery's formation director and is one of two original founders still in residence there. "But there was no prejudice – just a lot of welcome. Trappist monasteries around the world, and its pastoral setting west of Charlottesville, Virginia offers the serenity needed for the sisters to seek God through a "contemplative lifestyle" the order calls a "School of Love.
