Volume XXXI - Page 43 - 2015 Unconventional Professional Development for the Contemporary Educator When many educators think about professional development, what comes to mind is sitting in a room with 100+ other educators listening to a lecture, which may or may not be relevant to individual educators' professional development needs. Oen Maine teachers have to travel quite a distance to attend this meeting. e topic may have been suggested (or even mandated) by an administrator. Some of the time the topic that is being presented is familiar to the educator, and possibly only a fraction of the information is new to the educator. So, how can teachers empower themselves to make these learning opportunities more relevant, practical, and useful in their practice? How can teachers most effectively keep up with trends and information on educational reform? How can teachers still get quality professional development when funding is low or non- existent for these experiences? We know that good-quality, ongoing professional development is essential, even critical, to education. We know that new research in the field of education gives rise to new "best practices" which must be learned. Fortunately, technology and new formats create professional development opportunities that are ongoing and substantial, as well as relevant and convenient and can aid in garnering new learning to improve a teacher's skills.
