First Frid Where Art Meets the Cville Audience Couples dining al fresco, children eating their favorite homemade ice cream, students buzzing about the latest concert of their favorite band, and artists receiving guests to an exhibition, people meandering around happily exploring with their friends old and new. This picture sounds too idyllic to be true. And trust me, that is exactly what I thought when I arrived in Charlottesville three years ago to attend the University of Virginia. As a native Dallasite, I was admittedly skeptical of and somewhat confused by this small, quaint Southern town. But this scene is exactly what I was pleasantly surprised to find, without fail, every First Friday on the pedestrian mall in the heart of Charlottesville's downtown historic district. At around five o'clock on the First Friday of each month, the pedestrian Mall comes alive, transformed into a place of art and entertainment, with a night of culture and cocktails. Here you will find people from all facets of the community gathered in one place, enjoying an evening out together. Whether you are in it for romantic flair or just want a fun night out with your The Artizen Traveler Guide to Charlottesville, Virginia • Fall 2012
