36 ENGLISH AS A NEW LANGUAGE TEACHING STUDENTS WITH LIMITED OR INTERRUPTED FORMAL EDUCATION (SLIFE) Students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE) represent a growing population of English language learners in our K-12 schools. These students bring many assets to the classroom with them, yet they have unique needs. This course will help educators to understand the SLIFE population and examine the ways in which they can engage these students through the Mutually Adaptive Learning Paradigm (MALP®). Participants are expected to purchase a copy of the book Breaking New Ground: Teaching Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education in U. S. Secondary Schools by Andrea DeCapua and Helaine W. Marshall. BOOK STUDY: ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS AND THE NEW STANDARDS This study group will examine the issues presented in the book, English Language Learners and the New Standards: Developing Language, Content Knowledge, and Analytic Practices in the Classroom by Margaret Heritage, Aida Walqui, and Robert Linquanti. This book study is geared towards classroom / content area teachers who serve ELLs. It will be delivered in a fully online format, and participants can expect to spend 2.5 hours per week, reading and engaging with others in discussion about the topics presented in the book.
