Dear Colleague: With the increased focus on cultural awareness, sensitivity and competencies in schools, teachers are uniquely placed to prepare students for responsible global citizenship. By understanding and appreciating the role of culture in a global society, familiarizing ourselves with cultures other than our own and cultivating a genuine respect for all people and cultures, we can foster the competencies we need to work together productively toward achieving mutual aspirations. It is in this spirit, GCRTC facilitated collegial connections between teachers from the Greater Capital Region and Uganda, through The Giving Circle. The professional relationships forged between this diverse group of educators will be the foundation of an ongoing exchange of ideas and innovations. The Ugandan education delegation visited our region from late November into early December of 2018, spending time at GCRTC, NYSUT, SUNY Adirondack as well as Albany City Schools, All Saints Catholic Academy, Cambridge CSD, Guilderland CSD, Queensbury CSD, Shenendehowa CSD and South Colonie CSD, participating in professional learning experiences on best practices and viewing those best practices in action in area classrooms. GCRTC is pleased to announce that three of our collaborating teacher leadership coaches, Liz Daley, Kate Jarrard, and Mary Ann Nickloy have volunteered to travel to Jinja, Uganda over February break to share their expertise in managing inclusion, best practices in reading instruction and teaching through music and play. While there, they will learn about Ugandan education first hand, collaborate with Ugandan colleagues on instructional strategies and bring back innovative ideas to our region, highlighting the universal power of "for teachers, by teachers" professional learning. We look forward to sharing what they learn with you! Sincerely, Valerie Lovelace Executive Director Photo courtesy of NYSUT
