31 ENGLISH AS A NEW LANGUAGE TEACHING STUDENTS WITH LIMITED OR INTERRUPTED FORMAL EDUCATION (SLIFE) Students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE) represent a growing population of English language learners in our K-12 schools. These students bring many assets to the classroom with them, yet they have unique needs. This course will help educators to understand the SLIFE population and examine the ways in which they can engage these students through the Mutually Adaptive Learning Paradigm (MALPĀ®). Participants are expected to purchase a copy of the book Breaking New Ground: Teaching Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education in U. S. Secondary Schools by Andrea DeCapua and Helaine W. Marshall. The book study will examine the ways the scaffolding process works, through conversation and examination of key ideas highlighted in the book, and make connections to their teaching practice. Participants are expected to purchase or rent a copy of the 2nd edition of the book by Pauline Gibbons, Scaffolding Language, Scaffolding Learning.
