Letter from the Director: On behalf of the Policy Board and Staff of the Greater Capital Region Teacher Center, I am pleased to welcome you back for the 2018-2019 School Year! We have designed a collection of high-priority course offerings for you to choose from. Collectively, these courses represent the most pressing learning needs recently identified by teachers throughout our 13 county region. It is important to note that demand for professional learning has been consistently increasing in our area, most significantly for courses that address the new NYS Learning Standards, safe and supportive schools initiatives and technology integration. At the same time, our ability to provide this essential professional learning has been compromised by the nearly 30% legislative funding cut we sustained this school year. This is in addition to past cuts that together total almost 70%. We are now operating on a budget that is about 30% of our 2008 funding allocation. Despite this challenge, we are committed to continuing to support you in your efforts to reflect on your practice, stay current in content and pedagogy, and innovate. In order to maximize our programming opportunities for all teachers, we must offer fewer courses than we were able to offer last year - despite increasing demand. Therefore, many courses will have higher participant minimums and larger class sizes. This summer we had waiting lists in several of our courses. While in the past, we were able to open up new sections to accommodate higher demand, this will not be possible this year. To avoid being closed out of a course, we ask that you register early for any courses you may wish to take and as a professional courtesy, please drop any courses which you will be unable to attend as soon as you become aware of a conflict. This will allow other teachers who wish to participate the opportunity to attend. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this difficult time. Together, we will ensure we are able to serve the professional learning needs of as many of our teachers as possible. I wish you a safe, productive and professionally rewarding school year!
